February Branch Meeting – With Andy Wightman

February Branch Meeting
11th February
Where:       Dalkeith, County Hotel
Speaker:    Andy Wightman
Topic:         Land, Democracy and the Economy
Land provides the fundamentals of our existence as individuals and communities. It provides places to live, to grow food, to derive important natural resources, to play, and to sustain all life. Who should own the land? How should it be governed? How should decisions about its use be made? How should it be taxed? Andy Wightman will explore these questions and relate them to the state of the UK economy, the housing crisis and food security. He will outline the current land reform process in Scotland and the prospects for reform beyond the 2016 Holyrood election. What does this mean for us in Midlothian? What are our priorities?  What action do need to take?
Andy is a writer, researcher, analyst, commentator and activist on issues of land, power, governance, democracy and money. Over the past 20 years h has undertaken a wide range of work on land tenure, landownership, land reform and, more recently community land rights, governance and the hegemonic dimensions of land relations.
Branch business will take place from 6:30 until 7:00, with the general Public being admitted at 7:00 to hear Andy.
