Greens speak out on new bus crisis

After it was announced on Wednesday morning that First Scotland East is withdrawing entirely from the Scottish Borders and Midlothian and has in principle agreement with Craigs of Campbelltown that it will take over the services.

Malcolm Spaven, Scottish Green Party candidate for Midlothian South
in the forthcoming Council elections, said:

“This disgraceful announcement from First Bus is yet another slap in the face for communities that rely on their services. Some Midlothian communities, such as Howgate, may now be left with no bus service whatsoever. Only six weeks ago First Bus gave an assurance in writing to people in Midlothian that there were no plans to reduce the X95 service or any of its  routes into the Borders.  This company is showing its true colours as a transport oligarch that has grown fat by swallowing up former publicly-owned companies and pocketing hundreds of millions in taxpayer subsidies.  The only way to stop these monsters laughing all the way to the bank is by re-regulating bus transport and requiring guaranteed levels of service.”
